IP enclosure environmental protection ratings
IP enclosure environmental protection ratings are widely used in Europe to indicate the level of protection provided against external objects
and water ingress.
The rating is specified by the standard IEC 60529 and consists of a 2 or 3 digit code.
The first digit represents the level of protection against foreign objects, the second digit represents the level of protection against water ingress, and the third digit (if applicable) describes the protection against mechanical impact. ¡°X¡± can be used in place of a digit when it is not relevant.
NEMA enclosure environmental protection ratings
NEMA enclosure environmental protection ratings,on the other hand, are used in North America and are described in the NEMA Standards Publication 250-1997.
However, it is not possible to directly compare IP ratings with NEMA types, as NEMA ratings consider additional factors such as corrosion resistance and resistance to internal gas explosions. While a NEMA type can be considered roughly equivalent to an IP rating, the reverse is not true.
